She's a squishable nugget - following in her big sister's footsteps of being a shrimpster. Lillian is super active - she rolls rapidly in all directions and can pivot 360 degrees and scoot backwards. I'll put her down in the middle of the living room and 30 seconds later she'll be behind a chair in the corner. She is just starting to rock up onto her knees - this kiddo is going to crawl before we know it. She'll sit on the floor and play with toys for up to 20 minutes. This is nothing short of a miracle in our house.
We are full steam ahead with solid food. She gobbled up a jar of baby squash tonight...but isn't so sure about prunes. Who can blame her?
Lily is energetic, determined, snugly, and so totally lovable.

Bea is headed back to Children's Hospital today for a follow-up VCG exam to assess the state of her ureteral reflux problem. In preparation for her noon appointment, she had to have no food since last night. I fully expected that this would be challenging for a 3 year old who is food-centric, but she was amazing this morning and "played and played and played" as she likes to say. Bea and Ian are off now for the appointment where she'll be lightly sedated for the procedure. As the nurses put it, we get to see what our kid looks like drunk. Funny or scary? Anyway, this appointment is minor, but I am, nonetheless, in awe of my Bea.

Our cheeky monkey is 4 months old! Here are her current happenings:
-She sleeps from 9-5, nurses, and then happily conks out again on top of Daddy
-She thinks playing in her bumbo and exersaucer is fun for about 15 minutes
-She smiles all the time (especially at big sis Bea)
-When she laughs, it sounds like she is gasping for air
-She rolls from front to back and just today rolled from back to front!
-She probably drools about two gallons a day
-She is starting to reach for things with two hands and especially loves grabbing mommy's hair and trying to eat it
-When she gets really excited, she sounds like a screaming cat
In short, Lillian brings us endless joy.

Lily went in for her check-up yesterday and is measuring 50% across the board- weight 12.9lbs, height 23.5inches, head 40cm. I almost cried. Damn it feels good to be average! She is laughing, sleeping through the night, and generally being totally squeezable.

Beatrice had an amazing 3rd birthday on Orcas Island. Here are pictures of our adventures, which include ferry landing mayhem (Lillian is, ahem, a bit young to drive), birthday morning tea on the beach, a special birthday mani/pedi from Mommy, flying a kite, and of course, chocolate cake. It was a perfect weekend.

Lillian is a perfectly healthy 6 week old! At her doctor's check-up today, I gleefully responded "absolutely none" when he asked if I had any concerns about her health. She is (currently) sleeping well, going from about 10-3 each night and nursing well. We've both finally gotten the hang of it and (most of the time) it is actually quite relaxing to nurse. She smiled for the first time a over the weekend and I can't wait until we see more of her face all lit up :) Her stats are as follows:
Weight: 9.8 lbs
Height: 21.5 inches
Both are about the 35th percentile, so she still qualifies as a nugget.

We had the first 70 degree day of the year (very sad, indeed) and had a lovely picnic at Seward Park. Bea immediately stripped down to her skivvies and went in the very chilly Lake. Such a Northwest child.
Beatrice also deserves props for pushing her dolly's stroller all the way from our house to Madrona Park. We had doubts, but she muscled through, hills and all.

Our first two weeks as a family of four have gone surprisingly smoothly. Lillian is doing the newborn thing of mostly sleeping and eating and has even given us a few decent nights of sleep (this is all relative -- decent = sleeping in 3 hours chunks).

At her 2 week doctor's visit this week, her stats were:
Weight: 7 lbs 13.5oz (25-50%)
Length: 19.5 inches (25%)
Head: 34.8 cm (25%)

She's a little nugget!

I was sad to see Ian go back to work this week. Our two weeks home together zoomed by and I miss his company. As the pictures show, we've been all over town with our new arrival - Madrona Mayfair, Opening Day Regatta & Party, out to breakfast, dinner, and on many walks already. After being so housebound with Beatrice, I can't help but want to get out and about this time around. Thankfully, Lillian likes her carseat and her stroller rides! Beatrice is coping very well as a big sister. One of her favorite things to do these days is to be "just like Mommy" and feed, swaddle, and change her dolly. Very sweet. When she is tired and/or hungry, the terrible twos are a bit more terrible, but overall we think Bea is handling the change well.

Team Beatrice needs a new name! While we ponder something clever, we are proud to introduce you all to our newest team member: Lillian Elizabeth Adams. She was born May 1, 2011 at 6:14pm, weighing 7lbs 3oz. I labored with her for almost 24 hours and, after a grueling 3 hours of pushing, she came screaming into the world. I am soooo thankful not have had a repeat c-section. It looked like a possibility because Lillian was presenting sunny side up and wouldn't turn during labor. Often that means a c-section, but my medical team was incredibly patient and staid the course.

Most importantly, the newest member of our family is beautiful and completely healthy. Ian and I are floored that we got a "take home baby" - one that nurses, sleeps, and otherwise keeps herself alive all on her own. This is such a different experience than bringing Beatrice home. We are, though, on a steep uphill learning curve trying to balance a new baby and our fiesty Beatrice. She is coping as well can be expected from a two year old. She misses the focused attention, but is interested in her baby sister and making adjustments.

We packed in this weekend! Thankfully, we had a sunny Saturday and so started off the morning with crew races, then out to lunch, then Lincoln Park beach in the afternoon. We got to have two Easter Egg hunts - brunch at Nana's in the morning and dinner at Grandpa's in the afternoon. Bea is totally sated, we are totally pooped!

Why did Bea wear Nana's apron to the park?

Nana has now recovered from the 4 days and 3 nights with the indomitable Miss Bea while M & D went to Boston on their missions of meeting with friends and rowing at the Head of the Charles. If you ever have the distinction of having Bea as a house guest, expect her to take charge in a firm but gracious manner on every level from food to music to dress to household management. She will reward you with humor, curiosity, stimulating conversation and general enthusiasm for all activities. She will leave your house a wreck, the laundry not done, the newspaper unread, phone calls not returned and the need to catch up on your sleep. But Nana doesn't regret one moment. As for the apron wearing while walking to and from the park, you'll have to ask Beatrice.

Evergreen State Fair

Our visit to the Evergreen State Fair this weekend was only moderately successful, keeping in theme with life-after-paci. Did we mention we said goodbye to the pacifier a week ago? It's gone surprisingly well at nap and bedtime, but Bea has lost her brave edge and is suctioned to me whenever she feels a wee bit unsure.
I can't blame all of tears shed at the fair on the lack of paci as she was pecked by a chicken in the petting zoo (30 seconds after the picture was taken) which sent her into a downward spiral that resulted in tears over all subsequent animal viewings, even bunnies(!). She liked the tractors, the carousel, and of course, the scones, so all was not lost.

Bea had her first carousel ride at the zoo on Saturday. By the end of the ride, she was almost convinced it was ok. In Bea fashion, we had to try out different horses while whipping around, which of course made me totally dizzy. Since when does a merry-go-round make people motion sick?? I'm getting old.

Ian and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary with a trip to Washington wine country. It was our first weekend away from Miss Bea and was a success all around. Nana said that though she was exhausted at the end of the weekend, she loved having such a life force in the house. There is just nothing like waking up to a sweet round of ABCs.

The special care nursery at Swedish throws a reunion party every other year for past 'alumni.' It felt strange, driving to Swedish today with Beatrice belting out "party!" in the back seat. I'd like to say we are totally over the trauma with which she began her life, but mostly it feels like a separate life. How can we reconcile her early days with the child who refused to be pealed away from the bouncy castle? Like a typical toddler, Beatrice is demanding, energetic, and more fun than we could have ever imagined. We hardly have a chance these days to pause and think about that summer. But driving the familiar route to Swedish today, parking in the underground lot, taking the elevator up to the lobby, seeing the faces of fellow preemie parents - it was both heartbreaking and freeing. The memories came back, but we made it. Bea made it. We'll forever be part of the club, but it's really good that we get to choose when we visit.

I can't recall a rainier (and chillier) Memorial Day weekend. We made the best of it and trekked in the rain through Volunteer Park like true Seattlites. Bea has embraced the role and has recently become obsessed with wearing socks and tevas (her choice). Oh dear.

Mayfair parade & mud puddles

Our neighborhood has an annual Mayfair event, complete with a stroller/bike/trike parade, a clown, a bouncy castle, face painting, pony rides, and games. Bea performed like a seasoned parade queen, waving at all her admirers during the two-block trek (which took at least 20 minutes). The clown was not at all amusing to Bea and she would have been clobbered in the bouncy castle, so we just stuck to the slides and swings at the park. Nonetheless, it was great amusement.

Apparently, our goal was to seriously wear out the kid on Saturday and we took her to the beach in the afternoon. Once she got the hang of splashing in the mud (our little one has to be assured sometimes that getting dirty is OK), she did it with gusto.

Mother's Day

I had the most fantastic Mother's Day!! We went for a "hike" in the morning, using the term very loosely. Bea wasn't very cooperative about riding in the backpack for longer than 10 minute spurts, so our hiked turned into an amble, stopping every 20 yards to look at dirt/rocks/bugs. As she does, Bea serenaded us throughout the "hike" with renditions of "ABCs," "Twinkle twinkle," "Old MacDonald," "The Wheels on the Bus," and "Won't my Mommy be so proud of me." For those of you who watch Glee, Bea is an expert at mash-ups.
In the afternoon, we took a picnic out to Seward Park and had a glorious time. It's a perfect spot for wee ones to run free! I have nightmares about Bea plummeting off a cliff and spend a lot of time cringing when she gets too close to the edge of anything minutely dangerous. The beach at the point of Seward Park is a good worry-free zone for crazies like me.

We had the most wonderful time with my Mom last weekend! The weather was pretty crummy, so we did lots of indoor activities, like the aquarium and lunch at La Carta (where else?). The sweet waiter at La Carta brought Bea her own little dish of guacamole, which she ate with a spoon. What can we say, the girl has good taste. My mom and I got to steal away for a few house here and there for shopping and lunch. What a treat!
There are no pictures of Bea and Mimi because Bea is in a weird mommy-possessive phase. She didn't want anyone to take my attention away from her and acted out when someone did. A month ago, I would have describe Bea as an amiable child. No so now. She's been abducted by the two-year-old monster!

Mommy-daughter first verbal battle

Bea and I had out first 'heated discussion' a few days ago! I picked her up from daycare and it was a beautiful day, so we headed straight for the park. She was so excited, belting out "slide!" and "wee!" upon seeing the playground. But...when I got her out of the car I realized she had a dirty diaper and, alas I had not brought the diaper bag. Oh no! Trying to get Bea back in the car was a feat for an Olympian- she was totally hysterical. She cried all the way home and all the way through the diaper change. Finally she calmed down, but when I tried to put her back in the car to go to the park, she became hysterical again, kicking, screaming, tears, snot, the works. Finally, I put her down on the driveway and we had are first 'fight':
Me: Bea, do you want to go to the park?
Bea: (through tears) Yes!
Me: Then you have to get in the car.
Bea: (crying harder) No!
Me: If you want to go to the park, you have to get in the car.
Bea: Park! (looks at the car) No no no no no!
Poor girl can't quite reason through this one yet. I managed to get her back in the car (a miracle considering all the flailing limbs) and to the playground, but she was pretty annoyed at me for a while and didn't want to do anything I suggested. So it starts!

When I picked up Bea from daycare a few days ago, her teacher told me that at lunch time, Bea was drinking out of another kid's cup and when she asked Bea where her milk was, she put up her hands, shrugged and said, "I no no." This girl makes us all laugh!
