More good news!

Hi, All,

So much to report this evening, but I thought we'd lead with an image of the fantastic gift we received today. (left; Thanks so much, C&C, for everything). Perfect for the amazing Ms. Beatrice.

Anyhoo...

First off, food: Turns out that yesterday's barfing was probably caused by a short feeding tube. Ms. Bea has grown a little over the last four weeks, so the old tube-length was causing her food to pool in her esophagus. Blech. So far, so good, for last day or so.

Second: They (the medicinos) took out Bea's PIC (or IV) line. Now the only remaining tethers are her vapotherm (breathing thing) and the leads for her sensors. Her fussing is much more efficient now that she has full use of both arms to push us away.

Third: Eyes. The Little One had an eye exam this morning and it looks like her eyes are developing normally. This isn't insurance, but it's great news, nevertheless.

So that's about it for Beatrice. M&D (Mommy & Daddy) went to a NICU parent round-table this evening, which they found to be quite therapeutic. As it turns out, we're not the only ones who have gone through something like this; and we're certainly not the only ones to experience this type of complete, total, exhaustion. Nor are we the only ones to have nearly burned down a house by leaving a pot on the stove, but that's another story for another, earlier hour.

So... All the best. As always, we love to keep hearing from you; and thanks so much to everyone who keeps helping and pampering us. Couldn't do this without you.

Team Beatrice (Ian)

ew, pooling in her esophagus?? poor thing! so glad she is more comfortable and is getting a head start on the "no!" reflex.

i so love therapeutic meetings. and it will be nice to know a few other people who also basically live in the NICU. good for you for taking time to go.

Hi guys - Jeff and I would love to come visit Bea (and see you too!). We have to head to Orcas this weekend for a wedding, but maybe next week?

Also, not sure if this is helpful or not, but I'm pasting in a link to another blog that I read written by a woman who delivered her son at 29 weeks via emergency c-section (he's now 3 years old!). They spent about 6 weeks in the NICU. Here's the link and if you scroll down to the post dated 4/12/2004 titled "So you've decided to have a kid in the NICU!" you'll see a whole list of serious and sarcastic advice to new parents with a baby in the NICU.

We think of you guys all the time and can't wait to meet Bea!

So, I'm in Suzzallo library right now, trying to finish my AERA conference proposal and I just finished reading the Team Beatrice blog from start to finish. What an emotional journey! In the past hour, I've cried, laughed, smiled with hope, and ultimately come away with a sense of awe over the strength that Carol, Ian, and Beatrice have shown over the past month. Thank you for writing this blog and keeping all of your friends and family updated on your progress. You're in my thoughts and prayers and I hope I can visit with the Team soon.

Love, Dana

OMG - she's HUGE! or is that the camera angle?

In reference to the 15 minute laptop purchase, I suppose you are experiencing the saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff." As someone who sweats at just about everything, I've always hated that saying. In fact, it really only comes into play when big shit is happening, like with the 3 of you.

I am inspired by life via Bea and her GROWTH and DETERMINATION; via Carol with finally getting a mac - which she's wanted for about 2 years - oh, and her enduring love, strength and focus; via Ian with his witty, communicative, heartfelt postings.

The Team Beatrice blog is my escape from work - like a soap opera that actually does make me consider TRYING to "Not sweat the small stuff."

Love you!
Gail
